Biography
A Bavarian boy born on 21 March 1861, Charles Swickard crossed the Atlantic and swapped the Rhine for klieg lights, carving out a silent-era niche behind—and sometimes in front of—the camera. Between 1916 and 1920 he steered the destinies of desperados and sheikhs, marshalling Mixed Blood’s rough frontier justice, tightening the screws of suspense in The Last Straw, and conjuring desert moonlight for An Arabian Knight. Off-set he answered to “Dale’s husband,” a quieter role he cherished until the curtains closed on 12 May 1929 in Fresno, California, where the last reel of his life quietly faded to black.
