Biography
On 25 May 1854, Newton, Massachusetts, welcomed Clara Louise Burnham into the world, a girl who would grow up to fill pages with light and shadow. By 1914 she had given the silent screen The Opened Shutters; a year later Jewel arrived, followed in 1921 by a new edition of Opened Shutters—each story carrying her unmistakable signature of hope meeting heartache. Away from her desk she shared life’s quieter chapters with Walter Burnham, her husband and steadfast ally. Her own final scene closed on 20 June 1927, written in salt air on Bailey Island, Maine, where the Atlantic kept turning its own endless pages.
