Biography
Chicago greeted David Higgins with its raw June wind in 1858, and the city’s restless energy stayed with him throughout a life spent inventing characters onstage and on-screen. Between 1914 and 1916 he slipped from theater wings into the new glow of motion pictures, leaving three surviving celluloid footprints: the wry comedy of His Last Dollar, the backwoods drama At Piney Ridge, and the biblical spectacle The Conquest of Canaan. Off-camera he shared his life with actress Bliss Milford, his partner in both marriage and storytelling. The final curtain fell for Higgins in Brooklyn on 29 June 1936, seventy-eight years after his Midwestern curtain-raiser.
