Biography

Birmingham, England, sent a small bundle across the Atlantic on 20 August 1881; the bundle was Edgar A. Guest, who grew up to turn ordinary days into meter and rhyme. By 1915 he had already charmed the silent screen with *The Reform Candidate*, and two decades later he was still spinning verse into short films—*Ma and the Auto* (1936) and the sunrise vignette *Poetic Gem: Early in the Mornin'* (1935). Off the page he shared life’s cadences with Nellie Crossman, his steadfast wife. The final stanza closed quietly in Detroit, Michigan, on 5 August 1959, but the lines he left behind still whistle through American memory.
