Biography
St. Louis, 13 February 1864: a restless midwinter boy named Edwin Arden drew his first breath and, almost immediately, began rehearsing for a life onstage. By the flicker of early cinema he had become both guide and performer—directing and embodying rogues, detectives, and mountaineers in the serial cliff-hangers *The Exploits of Elaine* (1914), *The Beloved Vagabond* (1915), and *The Eagle’s Nest* (1915). Off-camera he claimed Agnes Ann Keene as his permanent leading lady, trading marquee lights for domestic lamplight whenever the cameras cooled. The final curtain fell on 2 October 1918, in Queens, New York, but the celluloid he left behind keeps the applause rolling.
