Biography
On 2 March 1862, the Mississippi River town of Lexington, Missouri, greeted Edwin Milton Royle’s first cry. A teller of frontiers and footlights, he set the stage for Hollywood’s first wave: his melodrama The Squaw Man leapt from Broadway to celluloid in 1914, followed by The Unwritten Law (1916) and the cosmic morality tale The Struggle Everlasting (1918). Away from the footlights he shared life’s long third act with Selena Fetter (1860-1955), his wife and steadfast collaborator. Royale’s curtain fell on 16 February 1942 in the electric hush of New York City, but the stories he sparked still flicker across screens worldwide.
