Biography

On 26 September 1875, Shakopee, Minnesota welcomed Eleanor Gates into the world, a girl who would grow up to spin stories faster than the Mississippi spun ice in winter. By the flicker of klieg lights she became the mind behind *Cupid the Cowpuncher* (1920), the wit that fueled *Once to Every Bachelor* (1934), and the heart that re-imagined *Poor Little Rich Girl* (1936). Between drafts she collected husbands the way some collect passport stamps: first Frederick E. Moore, then Richard Walton Tully—each marriage a new chapter, each divorce a final scene. Her last curtain fell on 7 March 1951 in Los Angeles, California, leaving behind characters who still insist on living far beyond their creator.
