Biography
On 20 May 1822, in the fortified border town of Phalsbourg, Moselle, a storyteller named Émile Erckmann drew his first breath. More than a century later, his imagination kept tolling: three separate screen versions of The Bells—1911, 1914, 1918—carry his name beyond the grave. He laid down his pen for good on 14 March 1899 in Lunéville, Meurthe-et-Moselle, the same Lorraine region that had once colored his earliest tales.
