Biography

Baltimore, 23 October 1838: the day Francis Hopkinson Smith first opened his eyes on a harbor town of clattering masts and iron-foundry clang. Those river-bent lungs later breathed life into stories that traveled farther than any steamboat he ever sketched. By 1917 he had conjured A Kentucky Cinderella, followed two years later by the novel Felix O'Day, and in 1921—six years after his own final curtain—his posthumous voice still spoke through Desperate Youth. The pen finally rested on 7 April 1915, this time in the electric dusk of New York City, leaving the ink to speak for him ever after.
