Biography

[ "Long before the term was cheapened, Francesca Bertini embodied the true essence of the screen diva, maintaining her aristocratic poise both under the studio lights and in her private affairs. Her journey began with La dea del mare in 1907, sparking a fierce competition among producers eager to capture her magnetism. Beyond her allure, she proved a capable auteur, stepping behind the camera to helm acclaimed productions like Assunta Spina (1915) and Tosca (1918). In 1921, she solidified her social standing by marrying the nobleman and banker Alfred Cartier. While the advent of sound slowed her prolific pace, she successfully navigated the transition to talkies, eventually making a final, symbolic appearance in Bernardo Bertolucci’s epic 1900 (1976). She sustained her legendary persona until her final breath in 1985, passing away within the opulent confines of a Roman grand hotel, where she held court for her admirers one last time." ]
