Biography
Francis Neilson first drew breath on 26 January 1867 in the port town of Birkenhead, Cheshire, England. Across nine decades he would reinvent himself many times, but posterity remembers him chiefly for the barbed elegance of his pen: the blistering indictment of hypocrisy in The Martyrdom of Philip Strong (1916), the marital battleground of A Butterfly on the Wheel (1915), and the glittering intrigue of Scandal in Paris (1928). His private story arc included two marriages—first to Helen Swift Morris, later to Catherine Eva O'Gorman—and ended on 13 April 1961 in Port Washington, Long Island, New York.
