Biography
Born among the jazz-soaked streets of New Orleans on 8 March 1870, George Gibbs spun tales that leapt from the page to the silver screen. His pen first pricked the public’s imagination with the whirlwind romance of *The Madcap* in 1916, ushered audiences into the languid splendor of *Paradise Garden* the next year, and, years later, resurrected the razor-sharp wit of the Enlightenment in 1933’s *Voltaire*. Storyteller to the end, Gibbs died quietly in Philadelphia on 10 October 1942, leaving behind a shelf of characters who still refuse to sit still.
