Biography

George R. Sims drew his first breath on 2 September 1847 amid the clamour of London, and the city’s restless pulse never left his pen. By 1908 he had traded newsprint for celluloid, scripting the larcenous sparkle of *Lady Letmere’s Jewellery*; eleven years later he steered *The Life Line* through storm-tossed melodrama, and in 1923 he dimmed the gas-lamps of Victorian London for the shadow-soaked silent *The Lights of London*. Between deadlines and opening nights he collected three surnames—Wykes, Harris, Collins—each a marriage chapter in a life already crowded with plots. The final curtain fell on 4 September 1922, leaving the capital he chronicled to echo without its sharpest storyteller.
