Biography

George Sand drew her first breath in Paris on 1 July 1804, slipped into breeches when society demanded corsets, and signed her rebellious pen name to novels that later leapt onto silent screens—Fanchon, the Cricket fluttered into 1915 theaters, Leoni Leo followed two years later, and by 1926 Die lachende Grille echoed her voice across German cinemas. Between ink and immortality she married Casimir Dudevant, but kept her independence; half a century after her birth she closed her final chapter on 8 June 1876 in the quiet village of Nohant, Indre, France.
