Biography

Hampton Del Ruth entered the world on 7 September 1879 in Delaware and spent the next seven decades turning ink and nitrate into stories that moved. As a writer and production mastermind he steered The Marriage Chance in 1922, wrangled the risqué energy of Naughty five years later, and in 1931 marshaled the crime tale Defenders of the Law. Off-screen he shared his life with two leading ladies—Alta Allen and, later, Helen Carlyle. The final fade-out came on 15 May 1958 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, closing the credits on a man who kept early Hollywood’s chaos orderly and its scripts humming.
