Biography

Paris welcomed Henri Bernstein on 20 June 1876, and the city never let him go. A sharp-eyed playwright, he set Broadway and boulevard stages ablaze with Samson in 1915, later smuggling Gallic wit across the Atlantic in The Washington Masquerade (1932) and Le voleur (1933). Offstage, he shared his life—and a wedding date—with Antoinette Martin. When the curtain finally fell on 27 November 1953, it rose again over a Parisian cemetery, the only neighborhood he had never tried to dramatize.
