Biography

October 1871, Raccoon Township, Indiana: a future silent-film pioneer drew his first breath. By forty-three, Howell Hansel had traded cornfields for carbon arcs, steering cameras through the cliff-hanging chapters of The Million Dollar Mystery (1914), the Southern charm of Colonel Carter of Cartersville (1915), and the hard-knock travels of The Road o' Strife (1915). Off-set, he shared his life—and story conferences—with Lucille Lee. The final curtain fell on 5 November 1917 in New York City, but the reels he spun still flicker.
