Biography
Paducah, Kentucky, greeted Irvin S. Cobb with a summer sunrise on 23 June 1876, and from that river-town cradle he spun tales that traveled farther than any steamboat. Bylines, books, and bourbon-laced lectures made him a household voice; Hollywood soon borrowed that drawl, casting him in The Face in the Dark (1918), Steamboat Round the Bend (1935), and Everybody's Old Man (1936). Off-screen he shared life—and countless stories—with Laura Spencer Baker. The lights of New York City dimmed for him on 11 March 1944, but the cadence of his humor still drifts like river fog over American pages and screens.
