Biography
Jack Lait spent his ink-stained prime steering the New York Daily and Sunday Mirror, a tabloid that roared under his hand and made him the city’s loudest press baron. When the Mirror presses cooled, Hearst lured him uptown to orchestrate its empire of headlines. In 1953 a rogue circulatory illness chained him to his apartment; the story he couldn’t outrun ended there, inside the walls that once rang with late-night rewrite calls. Between scoops he still found time to birth five living, breathing plays that flickered beneath Broadway’s marquees.
