Biography
Jacob Fleck entered the world on 8 November 1881 amid the gas-lit elegance of Vienna, then still the cosmopolitan heart of Austria-Hungary. Behind the camera he became a conjurer of stories, guiding the patriotic rally of Mit Herz und Hand fürs Vaterland in 1915, the breezy defiance of Mir kommt keiner aus two years later, and the lush moral maze of Eva, die Sünde in 1920. Luise Fleck—his creative and marital partner—stood beside him through every frame. He drew his last breath in the same city that first heard his cries, departing Vienna on 19 September 1953.
