Biography
Jacob Gordin opened his eyes on 1 May 1853 in Mirgorod, a market town that now lies within modern-day Ukraine but then belonged to the Poltava Governorate of the Russian Empire. A restless storyteller, he filled Yiddish stages with electric dialogue, shaping classics such as Kreutzer Sonata (1915), Di shtifmuter (1914) and Mirele Efros (1939). Rebecca C. Smith shared his life as wife and confidante. On 11 June 1909 the playwright drew his final breath in Brooklyn, New York, leaving behind a legacy still spoken in the cadence of Yiddish theater.
