Biography
A New Year’s baby of 1872, James Young first drew breath in Baltimore, Maryland, and spent the next seventy-six years shuttling between stage and screen. By 1913 he had already stepped behind the camera to guide *Beau Brummel* into flickering life, followed swiftly by *David Garrick* in 1914 and the courtroom sensation *On Trial* in 1917. Between takes he collected surnames: Clara Whipple, Clara Kimball Young, Rida Johnson Young, and Julie de Valera-Porkosky all answered to “Mrs. Young” at different times. His final curtain fell on 9 June 1948, this time in the electric glare of New York City.
