Long before talkies took over the screen, Johannes Gaulke stepped before the camera twice: in 1914 he roared through the exotic melodrama “The Lion’s Bride,” and five years later he traded jungle heat for agrarian longing in “Mutter Erde,” both silent landmarks that still carry his name.
