Biography
A midwinter baby, John B. Hymer arrived in Bowling Green, Kentucky, on 19 December 1875, and grew up to trade small-town quiet for the footlights of New York and the flicker of Hollywood. Between curtain calls, he sharpened a pen that etched the screenplay for the 1922 culture-clash drama East Is West, the 1927 backwoods morality tale Alias the Deacon, and the 1930 newspaper exposé Scarlet Pages, all while keeping one boot planted onstage as a working actor. Off-camera he shared his life with actress Eleanor Kent; together they rode the roller-coaster of silent-to-sound Hollywood until Hymer’s final exit in Los Angeles on 17 June 1953.
