Biography
Ottawa, Illinois, greeted Johnston McCulley’s first cry on 2 February 1883; six decades later, Hollywood screens still echoed with the swish of his most famous creation. Between those dates he spun reams of pulp into legend, birthing the black-masked avenger whose exploits flickered to life in 1920’s The Mark of Zorro and still galloped on through 1998’s The Mask of Zorro and 2005’s The Legend of Zorro. The pens finally fell silent when he died in Los Angeles, California, on 23 November 1958, leaving behind a hero whose blade never lost its shine.
