Biography

On a December day in 1817, Buenos Aires first heard the cry of José Mármol, a child who would grow into one of Argentina’s sharpest pens. Over the decades he carved verses, journalism, and the novel Amalia—so powerful that filmmakers returned to it again and again in 1914, 1936, and 1967, each time reviving his tale of love and conspiracy beneath Rosas’ dictatorship. The same city that witnessed his birth claimed him again on 9 August 1871, closing the book on a life spent challenging tyranny through ink and imagination.
