Biography
Paris welcomed Jules Barbier on 8 March 1825, and the city never really let him go. A librettist and dramatist who spun words the way a jeweler cuts stones, he supplied the verses that gave wings to Offenbach’s “Les contes d’Hoffmann,” and, more than a century after his death on 16 January 1901, his name still flickers across end-credits—credited posthumously on Life Is Beautiful (1997), Jojo Rabbit (2019) and The Adventures of Tintin (2011).
