Biography
Kirk La Shelle entered the world on 23 September 1862 in the prairie town of Wyoming, Illinois, and grew into the wordsmith who breathed life into Owen Wister’s cowboy classic—not once, but three times, scripting The Virginian for the screen in 1914, again in 1923, and once more in 1929. Off the page, he shared his life with Mazie Nodine. He died far from the western ranges he immortalized, succumbing on 16 May 1905 in Bellport, New York.
