Biography
Born in Szolnok on 25 June 1879, when the town still belonged to the sprawling Austro-Hungarian mosaic, Kornél Tábori grew into a storyteller who traded ink for celluloid. In 1914 alone he unleashed a triple burst of laughter: Pufi - Hogyan lett ünnepelt hös egy jámbor pesti férjböl?, Víg egyveleg, avagy Pufi és társai, and Pufi cipöt vesz, directing and scripting each rollicking tale that sent Hungarian audiences into stitches. Three decades later, on 15 July 1944, the machinery of annihilation swallowed him at Auschwitz, silencing a cinematic voice that had once turned everyday Budapest husbands into accidental heroes.
