Biography

A Pennsylvania native born May 26, 1886, Lawrence McCloskey turned silent shadows into stories. In 1916 he conjured Pasquale, a short bittersweet tale of a bootblack’s dreams; the next year he crafted His Sweetheart, a 1917 one-reeler that flickered with courtship and calamity. Four years later he returned with The Discarded Woman, a 1920 melodrama that lingered on love cast aside. Writer, director, and quiet architect of early American cinema, McCloskey exited the final reel on May 2, 1935, leaving the screen forever brightened by his brief, incandescent run.
