Biography

Leopold Jacobson entered the world on 30 June 1878 in Czernowitz, a humming border-city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that today answers to Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Pen in hand, he spun stories that leapt onto the screen: The Chocolate Soldier set hearts racing in 1914, Married in Hollywood glittered in 1929, and The Smiling Lieutenant charmed audiences come 1931. His final chapter closed far from any footlights—on 23 February 1943 inside the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp, now Terezín in the Czech Republic.
