Biography
Born under the banyan shade of Bangalore on 9 March 1869, Leslie T. Peacocke grew up where the scent of cardamom drifted through the British cantonment and the drone of temple drums competed with regimental bugles. By the time the silent-screen era flickered to life, he had traded the Deccan Plateau for the klieg-lit back-lots of Hollywood, scripting and steering three 1920 one-reel sensations—Injustice, Neptune’s Bride and Reformation—each a celluloid postcard of post-war morals and foamy maritime fantasy. Off-set he shared his life with Beatrice Ann Caroline Isabella Clifford Lloyd, a union as intricately named as one of his melodramas. The final curtain fell on 5 March 1941 in Manhattan, the roar of Broadway muffled by the winter snow outside his Upper West Side window.
