Biography

A Texan summer—9 July 1866—brought Macklyn Arbuckle into the world in San Antonio, and from that sun-baked beginning he grew into the rare performer who could make audiences laugh, sigh, and lean forward all in the same scene. He wrote as readily as he acted, lending his wry Southwestern wit to stage and then screen: first as the canny small-town candidate in the 1914 hit *The County Chairman*, later as the seasoned racetrack mentor in *The Thoroughbred* and the nostalgic ring-leader of *That Old Gang of Mine*, both released in the bustling cinema year of 1925. Off-camera he shared life’s spotlight with the woman who proudly took his name, Mrs. Macklyn Arbuckle. His final curtain fell on 1 April 1931, among the quiet riverbanks of Waddington, New York, but the reels he left behind still crank out the echo of his hearty, unmistakable laugh.
