Biography
On an April day in 1825, Brookfield, Massachusetts, welcomed Mary J. Holmes into the world—an arrival that would eventually send ripples through American popular fiction. Penning stories that leapt from the page to the silver screen, she watched three of her novels—*Lena Rivers* (filmed twice, in 1914 and 1932) and *Tempest and Sunshine* (1916)—find new life in early Hollywood. Off the page, she shared her journey with husband Daniel Holmes, and on 6 October 1907 she drew her final breath in Brockport, Monroe County, New York.
