Biography

Oscar Apfel slipped behind the camera in 1911, when movies themselves were still learning to walk. Three years later Paramount handed him the keys to their flagship productions and, side-by-side with Cecil B. DeMille, he steered the studio’s first wave of epics. A 1916 jump to Fox gave way to a restless, studio-hopping stretch—one-picture deals with every outfit that owned a back-lot and a dream. By the ’20s the budgets had shrunk and the marquees no longer flashed his name; Apfel kept working, grinding out quickies for the cinematic backroads. In 1927 he stepped off the director’s chair and into tailored suits on-screen, spending the next decade and a half as Hollywood’s go-to senator, tycoon, judge or general—authority in a three-piece suit, etched with the same steady gaze that once called “Action!”
