Biography
Born beneath the wide Iowa sky on 3 November 1877, R. Ellis Wales traded prairie horizons for the flickering frontiers of early cinema. As an art director, he conjured the stark desert rituals of The Penitentes (1915), the brooding castles of Macbeth (1916), and the moral crucible of The Test of Honor (1919), while his pen quietly shaped stories behind the scenes. Wales’s final curtain fell in Los Angeles on 11 December 1952, leaving behind silent shadows that still whisper his vision.
