Biography
Born under the January sun of 1851 in Buenos Aires, Rafael Obligado grew into the pen that gave Argentina some of its most enduring myths. Page by page he summoned the wandering spirit of the pampas: his verse epic Santos Vega leapt to the screen twice—first in 1917, then echoing again in 1947—while the 1915 landmark Nobleza gaucha fixed the gallantry of the gaucho in the nation’s imagination. The Andes finally closed his story on 8 March 1920, in distant Mendoza, but the characters he set galloping across the silver sky of Argentine letters have never reined in.
