Biography
London, 1875: a twenty-year-old R.C. Carton stepped onto the boards as a Shakespearean actor, but the footlights soon revealed where his real genius lay—behind the script, not in front of it. After early experiments co-writing with Cecil Raleigh, Carton flew solo, crafting feather-light comedies that pirouetted through West-End evenings and, later, onto cinema screens. Every curtain he raised featured his wife, Kate Compton; the two lives were timed like a final cue—he exited first, dying in their city, and she followed just six weeks later.
