Biography
Rex Beach, born in Michigan, had originally set his sights on a legal career before the allure of the Alaska Gold Rush diverted his path. He ventured north in search of fortune, but after five years of relentless pursuit he realized that gold would not satisfy him. Turning to the written word, he penned his first—and most famous—novel, *The Spoilers* (1906). The story drew directly from his own experiences as a prospector, exposing corrupt officials who swindled fellow miners out of their claims. The book became a bestseller, launching a string of adventure tales that captivated readers of the era. Many of his works were adapted for the stage and later for the screen; *The Spoilers* itself was remade at least five times after its 1914 debut. Beach also ventured into film production and authored several plays. His wife, Edith, died in 1947, a loss that left him deeply affected. Two years later, in 1949, he took his own life by shooting himself at his home in Sebring, Florida.
