Biography
On 16 January 1874, Preston, Lancashire, welcomed the future “Bard of the Yukon,” Robert W. Service, into the world. He spent his life swapping the soot of an English mill town for the howl of northern winds, spinning those frontier echoes into verses that studios later mined for motion pictures—The Roughneck (1924), The Trail of ’98 (1928), and Clancy of the Mounted (1933) all carry his stamp. Off-set he found steadier warmth beside Germain Bourgoin, the Parisian who became his wife. Seventy thousand sunrises later, he closed the final page on 11 September 1958, in the Breton village of Lancieux, Côtes-d’Armor, France, leaving behind a trail of words still cracking like sled-runners across fresh snow.
