Biography

Born under the wide skies of Riceville, Iowa on 22 May 1868, Romaine Fielding swapped the quiet of Mitchell County for the flicker of nickelodeons and the thrill of one-reel adventures. In front of the camera he became the desperate fugitive of A Dash for Liberty (1913), behind it he conjured the sacred fire of Hiawanda's Cross the same year, and two seasons later scaled the perilous heights of The Eagle's Nest (1915). Between takes he exchanged vows first with Joan Arliss, later with Mabel van Valkenburg, each marriage a new scene in a life scripted at breakneck speed. The final curtain fell on 15 December 1927 in Hollywood, California, leaving the lights of the growing film capital to glow a little dimmer without him.
