Biography
A Missouri farm boy who learned to spin stories before he could plow a straight line, S. Barret McCormick left Dewitt on 16 August 1890 and traded cornfields for klieg lights. Within a year of reaching Hollywood he had crashed the infant movie colony, penning and playing in The Golden God (1914), then pivoting to the morality tale The Disciple (1915) and the con-artist caper False Fronts (1922). When the last reel flickered out, he exited the spotlight and headed east, dying quietly in Denver on 28 September 1965, leaving behind three surviving films and a lingering air of prairie-raised mischief.
