Biography
Sidney M. Goldin’s life began on 25 March 1878 in the Black-Sea bustle of Odessa, then the Kherson Governorate of the Russian Empire—today’s Ukraine. Behind the camera he proved a conjurer of stories, steering silent-era audiences through the moral maze of Führe uns nicht in Versuchung (1922), the Carpathian yearning of Tam na horách (1920), and the Lower-East-Side heartbreak of East Side Sadie (1929). Off-set he shared his life with actress Betty Gärtner. On 19 September 1937 the final reel rolled in New York City, where Goldin’s personal curtain fell.
