A velvet-voiced Londoner who stepped from the gas-lit stage straight into the flicker of early celluloid, Sutton Vane Sr. first startled nickelodeon audiences in 1914 with *The Span of Life*, then tightened his grip on their emotions the following year through the mill-town drama *The Cotton King*.
