Biography
A crisp autumn day in Fredrikshald—6 September 1884—marked the arrival of Sven Elvestad, the boy who would grow into one of Norway’s most restless literary minds. By thirty he had already startled readers with Miraklet: Tavlor ur det katolska samfundslivet (1913), a novel that peeled back the velvet curtain on Catholic society life. Two years later he pried open the underworld’s jewelry box in Mästertjuven (1915), letting daylight glitter on the tools of a gentleman thief. In 1920 he crossed borders again, this time to the Paris suburbs, scripting the shadowy exploits of Die Banditen von Asnières. Thirty-four winters after his first cry, on 18 December 1934, the pen finally rested in Skien, but the pages he set loose still prowl the shelves.
