Biography
On 2 June 1840, in the thatched cottage of Upper Bockhampton, Dorset, the ticking parish clock marked the arrival of Thomas Hardy—an architect’s apprentice who would redraw the map of English fiction. His ink conjured Wessex out of chalk downs and sheep bells, gifting the world the storm-tossed farm of *Far from the Madding Crowd*, the tragic curve of *Tess* (later filmed in 1979), and the fallen woman at the heart of *Maiden No More*. Two marriages framed his life: first to Emma Lavinia Gifford, the blue-coated inspiration beneath his verse; later to Florence Emily Dugdale, the children’s governess who became his secretary, muse, and defender. On 11 January 1928, snow settled on Max Gate, his Dorchester home, as Hardy breathed his last, leaving behind landscapes haunted by love, coincidence, and the slow tread of time.
