Biography

London welcomed Tom Terriss on 28 September 1872, and before the echoes of his first cry had faded he was already rehearsing for a life on both sides of the Atlantic. Behind the camera he steered the 1914 adaptation of *The Mystery of Edwin Drood* through the fog of Dickens’s unfinished tale, then hopped forward a decade to chronicle marital mayhem in *His Buddy’s Wife* (1925) and crown a misbehaving aristocrat in *The Naughty Duchess* (1928). Off-set he shared the spotlight with his wife, actress Mildred Corneille Smith—also billed as Mildred Devere of the *Follies*—until the final curtain fell on 8 February 1964 in New York City.
