Biography
Korsør, 12 February 1879: a coastal wind carries the cry of the newborn Urban Gad. Forty years later that same wind would propel him through flickering arc-lights and nitrate dreams, guiding actors as though they were ships navigating uncharted emotional seas. Between 1913 and 1914 he conjured three early-cinema tempests—The Devil’s Assistant, Das Feuer, and The Call of the Child—each one a spark that helped ignite the feature-length flame across Europe. Off-set, his heart booked two leading roles: first with Esther Burgert Westenhagen, later with luminous Asta Nielsen, who became both muse and collaborator. When the final curtain fell on 26 December 1947, Copenhagen darkened a little, but the glow he left on celluloid keeps rolling, frame by luminous frame.
