Biography
In the realm of Romanian literature, Vasile Alecsandri stands as a towering figure, his name etched in history with the precise spelling he preferred: Alecsandri, not Alexandri. This masterful lyric poet and dramatist first drew breath in Bacau, Moldova, on 14 June 1821. His formative years were spent studying in the cultural hubs of Iasi, Moldova, and the City of Light, Paris, France. The revolutionary fervor of 1848 swept Alecsandri up, and he played an active role in the liberal uprising that convulsed Europe. As the forces of repression closed in, he embarked on a journey of exile, traversing the sun-kissed landscapes of France, Spain, and North Africa. With the unification of the two Romanian principalities, Alecsandri returned home, only to set out once more, this time to London in 1859, where he served as minister for foreign affairs, tasked with securing British recognition of the fledgling Union of Valahia and Moldova, the precursor to modern Romania. His distinguished career reached its pinnacle in 1885, when he was appointed Romanian ambassador to Paris. Alecsandri's life eventually came full circle, as he passed away on 22 August 1890, in the tranquil surroundings of Mircesti, Romania.
