Biography
A Manhattan spring delivered Victor Mapes on 10 March 1870, and the Hudson’s glitter seemed to slip into his ink. Over the next seven decades he spun stories that took flight on Broadway and in Hollywood: the 1925 courtroom twist The Boomerang, the 1937 screwball romp High Flyers, and the 1938 swing-era sprint Going Places. Offstage he shared his life with Anna Louise Hoeke, his co-author in the narrative of everyday love. The final curtain fell on 27 September 1943 along the sunlit Croisette in Cannes, France, but the reels he crafted still flicker, keeping the timeline—and the laughter—rolling.
